So it is the first week of January 2015 and you are probably already wondering how you are going to get everything done that you thought you wanted to in 2015…does that sound about right? Losing weight can seem daunting if you don’t have a plan and you have no idea how you are going to lose weight or how much weight you should lose. There are a lot of things you need to do before you start losing weight, in fact Chapter 4 of TimerDIET is dedicated just to what you need to do before you start to lose weight. Sometimes we procrastinate because we are just not sure where to start. Fear of failure can set in since we are truly positive we have no idea what we are doing or should do!

Lack of savings affects more than our spending decisions. It can affect our weight, our health, and our joy of life. Savings is not just for a rainy day. Savings allows you to live life without being in constant fear that you may lose a job, a client may leave, or an illness will bankrupt you tomorrow. Sometimes our desire to save money can be so great that we forget to give and that too, can create its own set of problems. We were really meant to spend, save (invest), and give. It helps our psyche! The way we see the world. The way we interact with the world. The amounts are irrelevant, the percentage of our out flow is really what makes a difference. While I think the percentage decision is a very personal one and you will feel it in your gut when you are right and when you are NOT! The most common starting points are 10% of income to giving and savings should be one year’s salary in the bank. Please don’t stress out if you don’t have this in savings, but do what you can to make that your goal this year. You will be surprised when you make savings a goal, along with a giving plan, miracles begin to happen. So do it now, make your plan and work your plan!

Are you not so organized or perhaps organized in some areas of your life and not so much in others? Organizing your things so you are not constantly looking for them is just as important as organizing your time so that you can get the most out of each day! Think each day how long will a task really take, try setting your timer and give yourself that exact amount of time to finish the task. You will be surprised that giving yourself only so much time to get something done will actually force you to get it done in a shorter amount of time. Be sure to set aside time at the end of the day to organize your stuff for the following day. Do your best to put in your ‘to-do’ list only what you plan on doing each day. Otherwise you are training yourself to not finish what you put on your ‘to-do’ list. As you go through the day and you realize that your time is not as available as you originally thought, start moving or deleting things from your to-do list. This allows your to-do list to be only those items you currently believe you will finish that day!

Today we are talking about dreams, those that we think we should have, those that we want, and those we don’t dare to dream.

If you have ever dreamt of being a little smaller, a little more fit, or get to the point where food is no longer an issue: I know what it is like to feel like those kind of dreams are just not possible, until one day almost six years ago, I said enough is enough and made a plan to “make it happen” I wasn’t going to take NO for an answer. I knew I could make lasting changes that in the end would get me to my weight loss goals. Now my goals are more of fitness and body muscle. I am in my 50’s and I want to make sure I take care of my body as best I can. I exercise daily and strive to include weight bearing exercises into my routine. I could say that I am too old, it’s not possible, or I could say…every day is another day to make a goal and keep it!! You will feel so much better once you are at your comfort weight!!

Time is something we all value. Time is money, you have more than likely heard that saying before. In some ways it is more valuable than money. You can always earn more money, but you cannot earn more time. You must be vigilant with your time and be sure not to squander it. Your dreams depend on you accounting for your time in a way that moves you toward your dreams. Do we go through the days dealing with crisis and not tending to the things that could make our dreams come true and minimize the occurrence of crisis? Even if you promised yourself to spend 15 minutes a day working on your dream, do you realize that would be over 90 hours in a year? Try it—schedule 15 minutes each day this week to work on your dream. Figure out what it will take to make it happen!

This section is dedicated to my step-father who passed away this last week. My mom and he met and married after me and my sisters had all grown up and we had moved out of the house. But, even though he entered our lives much later in life he was very much a part of our family vacations and holidays over the last 30 years. I remember this one vacation/holiday during Christmas in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida when my step-father told my oldest grandson: “Dream big and believe, focus on the yacht and someday it will be yours” My grandson had just mentioned how he would love a yacht someday. It would have been easy to say, ‘oh that will never happen’ or ‘you don’t want a yacht do you?’ But, instead my step-father made my grandson feel his dream had validity and if he really wanted it, it could happen.

When it comes to money be sure to: 1) Spend it on what you need and sometimes on what you want, 2) Save some for peace of mind and the dreams of your future, and 3) Give some to those less fortunate. All of these things need to be done with your money—today! Not tomorrow, not when things get better, not….whatever you are thinking. Do them now and you will feel so much better.

So dream big, make a plan, and make it happen!!

So I, myself, am not Jewish, but many of my new friends over the last year are. So being the research analyst type person that I am I decided I should find out what all of my friends are celebrating Wednesday night. I had heard of Rosh Hashanah and I knew it was a Jewish celebration, but I did not know it was the Jewish New Year. It is a time of celebration, new beginnings, and reflection. On the surface it seems very similar to New Year’s Day on January 1st. But, when you read about the intent of the High Holiday it is very specific in its purpose to reflect on the last year and compare the results of the year to what was hoped for in the year prior.

For many of us January 1st is just a changing of the calendar and reason to get dressed up and have a party. Many of us do resolutions and various of us make goals. But, it would appear that Rosh Hashanah is very specific in asking as a family, including children, what do you think you needed to improve on and what do you want to accomplish in the coming year. It is not about just turning the calendar and moving on.

What We Can Learn

Reflection both accomplishments and shortcomings is an important part of life and should be done at least once a year and with intent. Getting the children involved in such introspection is important to instill lasting values. Sharing, as a family, our goals and dreams brings about a closeness that cannot be denied.

Do you know what you want?

When you think about your day and what you need to do, what are your intentions? Do you have goals? When you do the things you need to do are you intentionally doing them to achieve your goals? Many people who have won the lottery have said that when they bought their ticket, they bought with the intention of winning—multiple times! People who have succeeded had a vision of what they would achieve and even in some cases—when! Each golf swing, each lap in the pool, and each call had intention.

Others Intentions

When you think about it the majority of our disagreements in life have to do with conflicting intentions. We may be at odds with other people’s intentions. So do we need to give up on our own intentions to keep the peace…NO! We do need to understand the other person’s intentions and hopefully they will want to understand ours. Sometimes both intentions can occur at the same time and there really is no threat, even though at first there was a perceived threat. Sometimes you have to take turns and then of course there is the dreaded compromise. I really am not a fan of the compromise, I do ironically feel that letting someone else’s intentions be just as important as our own as way to make peace. It is not giving up, it is not compromising…it is saying that what the other person wants is just as important as what you want.

Every day we have to look to our own intentions and see why are doing what we do. Sometimes days go by and we have no idea why we are doing what we are doing, watching what we watch, or talking to whom we talk with. When you are preparing to do anything, pause for just a second, and say, “What is my intention?” “What would be my best outcome?” “Please make that happen!”

What do you want to accomplish? What are your goals? Do you have short-term and long-term goals? Have you made a written plan to make your goals happen?  Life can be very hectic and before you know it the day, week, month, year, and decade have gone by and those goals are distant memories…

Have you ever looked at someone who has achieved much greatness and said, “I don’t know how they did it?” This can be seen in athletes, especially. There is no way that a great athlete woke up, after years of leading a sedentary lifestyle, walked onto a field and won. No, they may not have started as a young child, but there was a point in time when they did wake up with a dream. With that dream came a plan, perhaps one that they created on their own or one that was created for them with a coach or parent. But, discipline was involved as well as a structured life. The fun times were also structured and well defined as to what is and is not allowed. If you want to achieve greatness in any area of your life this is what you need to do.

At some point you need to stop educating yourself and DO! I just watched a TV segment that showed a woman with $70,000 in college debt and no prospects for work in her field of study. Education is important and sometimes that comes in the form of college and sometimes it does not. Educating yourself without a clear defined goal and purpose is just that…education without a clear defined goal or purpose and can lead to financial devastation for you and your family. Do you know what you want to do with your degree? If you had that degree right now today, what jobs would you be qualified for? How many of them are open in the place you want to live? Do they require additional experience, thus the possibility of getting an internship while in college? Or working part-time in your field of study during the summers. Go look for job openings and see if you can find out what salary positions in your field of study with the exact degree you want to get will pay.

Alternative to Formal Education

Depending on what you want to do there are a lot of different ways to get education. You can even audit a college course for a fraction of the cost. This means you attend the class and do everything that everyone else does but you do not get a course credit for the class. Perhaps you don’t need a degree but you do need to refine your skills in a certain area. There are also unlimited self-study courses out there that specialize in personal and professional development and are great for learning software programs or business marketing and structure. Many are free if you are willing to listen to their pitch for a portion of the course.

Whatever your plan is take the necessary steps to make it happen. You can adjust along the way. But, inaction will give you just that—no action! Try it—make a goal and then make a plan, what is the worst that could happen?

Do You Have a TV Schedule?

How do you decide what to watch? How do you decide how much to watch? Do you seek out new programs to watch since your favorites were cancelled last year? Do you watch TV from the time you get home to the time you go to bed? Do you even care what you watch as long as the TV is on? About 10 years ago I wanted to start being cognizant of the time I was spending watching TV. So I got out the Fall TV Guide and a spreadsheet on the computer and figured out which shows were important to me and did my best to keep it to about 1-2 hours a night, some nights there were none. Some people may say that is too much TV; while others will admit to watching much more. That really isn’t the point…

What Do You Want Your Life to Look Like?

It can be all too easy to come home from a day of work and sit in front of the TV until it is time to go to bed. Only to realize years later that what you wanted to accomplish in life hasn’t happened yet. But, at least you know what happened on such and such program…write down what you want your life to look like. What do you need to learn to make it happen? Sometimes the reason we are tired when we come home is that we don’t have anything exciting to look forward to. So make some plans, have something to do. What is your passion? Painting? Music? Creating a patent? Writing a Book?

Please do not tell me that your passion is sitting at home day after day, night after night watching TV. Is it? Sometimes TV and movies are OK to watch as a distraction from our own lives, but don’t let them replace living our own lives.

Admit You’re Happy Month

In Defense of Being Just FINE

 August is #Admit You’re Happy Month, but today I am “Just Fine.” I am not happy or sad, just fine. Some days I have pockets of happiness and others pockets of sadness. But right now, in this moment, I am “just fine.” It is as if society doesn’t have a place for me being just fine. Am I hiding my feelings? Is it possible to be just fine? I think I am just fine therefore, I AM.

It appears that if I am not happy, then perhaps I am ungrateful or selfish or defective. At what point in society did we decide that being happy was a mandate? It used to be that having a good work ethic was of the utmost importance. Then we decided that work was not the be all end all, happiness was. “As long as my kids are ‘happy’” (as they engage in destructive behavior in search of happiness), “I just want them (my spouse, partner) to be happy” (as they are walking off to divorce court), “I am just not happy anymore” (as if happiness is to be a constant state of mind).  Don’t you think if you had to do it all over again, you would not wish for happiness? Happiness is fleeting at best and it is there to give us appreciation when we do not have it. Happiness was never meant to be a constant state of mind.

Gratefulness is NOT Happiness

When I went through severe financial difficulty in the summer of 2011, I was grateful that my basic needs were still met by God, but I was NOT happy. When my oldest daughter was struck by a car and was killed at the age of 33 in 2012, I was grateful that it was instantaneous and her suffering was not long lasting. I was NOT happy. When I ended what could have been a very bad relationship over a decade ago, before it was, I was grateful for the wisdom, but I was NOT happy. Being grateful is not synonymous with happiness. Conversely, one can be happy and completely ungrateful for what caused them to be happy.

What Makes Me Happy

Special moments with my kids and grandkids, watching a funny movie, getting enough of the winning numbers on a lottery ticket to buy lunch, an unexpected kiss, making someone else smile, there are many more but they happen spontaneously. I don’t demand happiness, it just happens or it doesn’t—as it is meant to be. So I am off to my “just fine” life and that is perfectly fine with me, in fact…it makes me quite happy…

Can You Picture it?

Can you picture it?

Is there something in your life that you want changed? Or is there a goal that you want to achieve? What is the most important thing to do in achieving it? (Other than reading my book coming out this month TimerOrganizer—shameless plug). You need to Picture It. You need to picture it with gratefulness, not hope; appreciation, not anxiety. If you can’t picture “it” this way, perhaps it is not your true desire. Maybe it is someone else’s or societies. If something is your true desire you feel at ease and excited.
